Diversified Cuts Barbershop on Baltimore Street is making room for more hot shaves

Four years ago, Josh Myers was looking for a job after graduating from World A Cuts Barber Institute in York.
When no one was hiring, the Hanover native took the matter into his own hands, opening Diversified Cuts on Baltimore Street.
“It was the best thing I ever did,” Myers said.
The shop is exactly as the name implies, he said.
Employees do everything from standard cuts for children, personalized designs, perms and hot-razor shaves.
That type of diversity was lacking in the area before he opened his shop, Myers said.
“There was a need for a barber shop that could do everything, not just one style,” he said. “We do everything, like a lot of people don’t use a straight razor anymore either. We still do the hot shaves.”
The shop was a hit once it opened, Myers said. Two years after opening, Diversified Cuts had to move out of their original store on Baltimore Street to a more spacious shop a few doors down, he said. The current facility has six chairs for cuts and three more specifically for hot-razor shaves.
“We get all types of people in here,” Myers said. “It’s neat because we have regulars who know each other just because they keep coming in at the same time. That’s the type of place we want.”
The hot razor shaves are popular among the locals, he said. The demand is so great that the store is going to expand specifically for them, he said. Rooms in the back, which are currently empty, are going be redesigned to look like the barber shops of the ’50s.
There will be a non-alcoholic bar, a dartboard and wooden chairs to give it that old-school feel, he said. The shop will even offer manicure services for men.
The expanded hot shaves area is expected to be ready by next spring, Myers said.
The busy shop — it has been booked virtually all day, every day, for months — is also adding its sixth full-time barber in October, he said.
Fidel Ramirez, a barber at Diversified Cuts, can vouch for how busy the shop has been. Ramirez has been working at the shop for about four months and rarely has times for a break during his shift, he said.
Ramirez likes to specialize in designed cuts, he said. He doesn’t need a lot of time to prep for requested designs, instead preferring to freestyle based on what the customer wants.
“Whenever I’m done cutting somebody, watching them leave with a big smile on their face, it’s like, ‘Oh yeah I know I definitely did my job,'” he said.
